Sharp Focus! What to know about EC’s Level 2 Written Test

This is part 2 in my experiences to share with you what I thought about some of the rider level written tests that I just recently challenged. The rider levels are part of Equestrian Canada’s Learn to Ride Program. I actually found the Level 2 test easier than the Level 1 test. Perhaps this was because I was quite nervous initially. But once I had successfully completed the first test, I knew that I was well on my way. Just like the Level 1 test, if you have been around horses for quite some time, you should have no issue completing this test.

What you can expect

Just like the Level 1 test, there are two parts, one part on stable management and one part stemming from the Rider Levels Manual that you can purchase from your local PTSO.

It is important to note that the pass for these tests is a 70% – which I think is a fairly low threshold. It is still worth getting the manuals before you get started because at least this will let you know what you need to focus on. If you still need some help, here are my tips to what you should focus on during the Level 2 written test. Once again, it was my experience taking the English Learn to Ride tests, so that is all I can comment on.

It is important to learn the parts of the bridle and parts of the saddle. Look closely at the diagrams in the book because the pictures are quite small and it may be difficult to see where the lines are pointing to. Think about how you might apply these to the horse. So you might ask yourself:

How far below the projecting cheek bone should a cavesson noseband sit? If you know how to fit a bride and you have read the books, you will know that the correct answer is 1-2 fingers.

You might also think about how often you clean your tack (after every use) and why you clean your tack (to inspect for damage and to make the tack last longer).

Know your Feet (Hooves!)

In thinking about parts of the horse, Level 2 tends to focus on the feet. Do you know the parts of the hoof, including the wall, sole, bars, frog, cleft of frog and the heel?

Think about where those hooves will be standing. Do you know they types of bedding? Shavings, paper, straw, peat moss, pellets? Why do you need bedding? Well, it is to absorb urine of course, and to cushion those hooves!

Finally, you are going to want to know the markings on the legs and the face. This includes sock, stocking, and ermine as well as star, stripe, snip, blaze and bald face.

Oh, and one last thing…do you know your rein aids? There are five. Direct, supporting, pulley, indirect, and open.

Once you have mastered these concepts, you are ready for the level 2 test! Good Luck.
